"And do these animals talk to you?" Kane asked smoothly, "A person needs friends that he can talk to, I think."
Kane watched blankly as Jack scratched his head with his... foot. He didn't say anything, but thought to himself that the boy needed a mind-healer. Despite that the child was obviously a half breed, it still was a feat for a bipedal bone structure to twist that way, and still be successful in dealing with an itch.

Jack
Jack cocked his head to the side as though he didn't understand. "Yes... The amnimals talk to Jack" he answered trying to speak like Kane. His voice yielding a questioning tone to it as though he didn't know why Kane was asking such a question. Of course the animal spoke with Jack. Didn't they speak with everyone? Kane was a birdman so why didn't the little birdies talk to him? Did they not like him or something?

"..."
Kane was silent for awhile as he considered the boy's words. It must be a wild talent of some sort. Kane knew about wild talents of magic of course, but he had heard they were most common in humans. The young one's expression was so incredulous that Kane almost felt like smiling, or laughing- but the urge passed quickly without his expression even fluttering.
"That is ery clever of you to talk to the animals," Kane replied to him, half conversing, half explaining, "Most people do not know how to talk with animals, or they can't. Animals talk a different language from us. It is very clever of you to understand it. But it is also good for people to understand people." You are a "people" Jack, Kane thought to himself, And even without knowing you at all, I can tell you haven't realized you aren't a canine.

Jack
Jack was confused by Kane's words. "People understand people?" he said in a questioning tone, "But Jack is amnimal..." Jack wondered why Kane didn't know that. All Jack knew, all he remembered, was the wild and the animals. During his younger years he survived on the sympathy of the non-predatory animals and his own infantile skills. Though Jack never actually grew up he did matured physically a little faster then most babies.

"Little one... Jack... I can not tell you how you came to be in these woods, but I can tell you that you are not an animal. Animals are not able to learn how to speak the tongues of people... and since you can talk to me, you are not an animal." Kane stretched his wings as he spoke, and ruffled them out spilling a few loose feathers onto the forest floor. They were huge and brushed up against the trees. He hoped that Jack would understand his words.

Jack
"Jack is an amnimal!" he cried out looking hurt by what Kane had said. "The other amnimals are Jack's friends and they don't try to hurt him like the stupid 'peoples' unless it for food!" Jack didn't like the people in town they always tried to hurt him and drive him off, sometimes before he had even done anything. Jack was a little startled by Kane's sudden unfurling of his wings and quieted up as though the action meant for him to shut his mouth.

"Some people are bad," Kane said, "but some are good as well. There are people who are gentle and friendly, and there are young people, who like to play games, just like young animals. Many animals are good, quiet and kind... Some animals are not always good- some animals bite, and chase, and steal food." Kane looked at Jack very intensely. "In a way, animals and people are the same. If you break animal rules, going too close to a mother bears den, or hunting a wolf's kill, they will be unkind to you- if you break people rules, running on four legs when you have two, attacking just because you are afraid, they also will be unkind."
Kane hadn't known why he was following the boy out here into the forest. He didn't know this child at all. But he found he felt protective of the strange youngster, and felt a need to teach overwhelming. A thought rose unwillingly in his mind I miss my brother. He pushed it away, shaking his head, and continued speaking.
"I think you have learned animal rules quite well Jack. That means you must know how important rules are. The only reason the city is a frightening place is because you do not understand its rules yet. But you must learn new rules for each new animal you encounter; if people are just a new animal, you must watch them and learn. Come learn people rules Jack! Learn about the city, then you will have a new ground to hunt upon, and new animals to befriend."

Jack
Jack was a little taken aback by the Kane's speech. Should he leave his home and go to the city? Jack looked around at the woods around him. "But what about Jack's home?" he asked thinking woefully about leaving and never being able to come back. "What about Jack animal friends? Where would Jack live and how could he learn rules? Jack has no friends in the mean place..." he said. Jack wasn't completely against going, but he didn't want to leave his friends or his home really. He also didn't want to live in the city alone. He was afraid.

Kane suddenly felt tongue tied. He could answer the boy's fears, but not his logical concerns without some discomfort. "You would be able to return to the woods whenever you wanted, as easily as you might make a trip to the river, or to the farms. You would hardly be gone from your home."
But as for where the boy would stay? Kane knew he could invite the boy in with him, but was he sure he wanted to make such a commitment to the child? It wasn't what Kane had planned coming out here, and it seemed an impolite answer. Kane would feel fairly manipulative. And was Kane really the best teacher when it came to the ways of society? He could hardly keep himsel fout of trouble sometimes! And was it fair to the boy...what am I doing? looking for a surrogate brother? Kane's thoughts accused, and he cringed inside before pushing those emotions down into a tidy little box where they couldn't hurt him.
Logically, after all that had been said, there was nothing else he could do, so he told himself.
"If you want, you can stay with me. I have a home in the city. It is warm, dry, secure. I am willing to teach you some of the city people's ways. But there are some things that we would have to learn together."

((Sorry! I've been out of the loop. As to what to do now... I don't know. I was sort of movimg towards Kane taking Jack in, as you can see. So it all depends on whether Jack was going to come try living in the city for a while or not.))

((I guess I can make Jack go with you, might be interesting))
Jack
Jack paused and thought about Kane's offer for a moment. He wasn't sure what to do. Part of him felt that he shouldn't go, but part of him wanted to go see what it would be like. Jack whimpered slightly like a dog would tend to do in a time of hard thought or when it wanted something. He wanted to know what to do, but he figured that no one would tell him. Nobody ever did. He was alone aside from his friends, but they had their own things on their minds. Suddenly Jack shook like a dog and then looked up at Kane with a slightly mischievous smile and agreed to come. He then told Kane to wait for a second and then tore off back to his home and grabbed his things and returned. He then followed Kane from that point on.
