Name: Sedaia “Swift” RaMorte
Age: 23
Race: Human
Weapons:
Sedaia carries a large number of knives on her person. She has one in either of her boots, a few strapped to her thighs, at the small of her back, in the lining of her coat, up her sleeves, on a sash over her shoulder, and wherever else one could possibly think to secrete a blade. They total out to be 64 small knives and daggers, most of them thin, sharp and built to throw. Many of these daggers and knives are enchanted. She also has enchanted feather clips, which are described below.
Abilities:
Sedaia has no actual magical abilities, except those given to her by enchanted items, which she covets. She has access to enchanters through wealth. Her favorite set of fighting knives hold an enchantment that makes her able to summon them from thin air. Many of Sedaia’s throwing daggers are enchanted with fire, ice or lightening. She has a signet ring that allows her to communicate with any other member of her guild, as she spends the extra money to make them inexpensive little rings that receive her signals. Sedaia has a delicate golden anklet that can turn into a minute poisonous snake. A choker of woven leather bands around her neck gives her enhanced speed from a quickness that was uncanny to begin with. She had a silver charm bracelet so laden that it jangles. Throwing down the little orb shaped charms, various things begin to happen- smoke to rise from the ground, a heavy mist to appear, a blinding flash of light or a minor explosion. Only Sedaia can decipher what orb does what. Sedaia has a string of enchanted beads about her waist that stick to a person when thrown. These are tuned to her signet as well, and allow her to follow people effortlessly. Lastly, Sedaia has many feathered clips, kept in her pocket when not in her hair, that act like darts when thrown and fly towards a target under Sedaia’s control. They are very dangerous objects, even if they seem only to be harmless feathers.
Appearance/Personality:
Sedaia is a small, slender woman with dexterous hands, and clever, mischievous brown eyes. She stands at about five feet, but has developed the unique skill of making herself appear much taller or shorter through attitude and slight changes in posture. She has very dark brown hair that is often mistaken for black. Sedaia is very athletic, and has the body of a dancer or a gymnast, for she is both. She can move as quickly as a striking snake, or deceptively slow. She is careful in all she does and lives by the magician’s law: “the hand is swifter than the eye.” Sedaia is a skilled actress, and can seem shy or bold, or however she wants to appear to her opponent. Sedaia sees the world as a challenge to be met, and every person is just another obstacle or stepping-stone on her rise to power. She does not see people as friends, and if she calls you an acquaintance or business associate, you know you have risen high in her eyes. Sedaia changes the style of her clothing with her surroundings. Chameleon-like, she chooses a wardrobe that is commonplace to the area she is frequenting, hating to stand out, unless it suits the personality she is trying to portray. She is practical to the point of being brutal, and a horrendous show-off. She is skilled at all things covert, and can fade into her surroundings so well that she seems to disappear. She moves as silently as a cat; most people do not notice her unless she wants to be noticed. She is an amazing pickpocket, and climbs like a squirrel, rarely needing rope. Her ears are keen and trained to pick up noises that most people would miss. It is almost impossible to sneak up on her. There is no lock that Sedaia hasn’t been able to crack, which has given her high standing among her colleagues. Sedaia always knows when to gracefully retreat without losing face. She can usually talk her way out of jams and ruts in the road, but still can fight with the best of them when she needs to. She is a con artist, and a cat burglar, and is quite sure that she is the best. This might be because, although Sedaia has taken some amazing chances, she has never been caught. When it comes to business, Sedaia is cold as ice. She is certain that she is better than everyone else.
Other than being a sly, power hungry woman, Sedaia can be pleasant. She has a sarcastic sense of humor, (though often, only she finds her jokes funny). Though she puts up a front of ‘power in numbers’, she often trains young people as thieves for no other reason than to get them eating something decent. She cares about those under her ‘command’, though she is careful not to show it, and hates when they get hurt. She laughs when they are arrested, and calls them, ‘clumsy enough to get caught’, but always sees that they are helped out once released. She inspires loyalty from her followers, and there is not a single one that would betray her or the ‘guild’ she runs.
History:
Sedaia was born to two very clever parents. On of them was a manipulative noblewoman named Mari, also known as Marionette. The other parent was a street thief named Rodier RaMorte.
RaMorte was skilled in the use of knives and the ways of murder. He was a cut throat with few ambitions other than fame and fortune. He was a skilled pickpocket, though he considered it below him, and a renowned cat burglar. The guard had been after him for awhile when he finally tried to rob the house of the rich Koleska family. The mistress of the house, Mari Koleska however, would have nothing of it.
Mari had been born into riches, and thus was far more interested in politics than she was in anything else. The name Marionette had been given to her by some of her lower class associates. Mari was manipulative; she strove to control everyone she came across. She did this with money, promises and threats. If Mari set her full attention upon you, it was inevitable that you become ensnared and wrapped around her delicate fingers. Mari had assassinated two older brothers to become the mistress of house Koleska.
Mari caught RaMorte trying to rob the house. There was something of a scuffle, but in the end RaMorte won. He was going to kill Mari so that he could finish ransacking the house, but she convinced him not to. RaMorte fell under Mari’s employ, and he was pleased with the money he was making.
They worked seamlessly together, those two; RaMorte was an extension of Mari’s hand, a situation she adored, and Mari was RaMorte’s stepping stone towards power. They developed something resembling a friendship, though both hid it well.
When RaMorte proposed to Mari he laid it out like a business transaction and it lacked any romance. That was partially his reasoning; he was desperate to conquer the Koleska family holdings, and wedlock would see all of Mari’s possessions pass to him. To RaMorte’s stunned surprise, Mari quickly accepted his proposal; she was excited to and had already drawn up their marriage contract. The goods of Koleska were split evenly between them, giving neither greater power. The noble house of Koleska became the noble house of RaMorte.
As a wedded couple they butted heads. Their relationship didn’t change much from as it had been when RaMorte was robbing Mari’s house, but deep down the two had developed an unbreakable affection for one another. The relationship worked well for their power. RaMorte’s small crime ring of pickpocket youngsters and thugs was given what can only be called better funding. With a husband Mari had access to certain social functions that she had been barred from before, and she extended her spy network to cover all other noble houses; she even had a few ears in sanctuary. Soon enough, the couple named their tribe of brigands a Guild, and set to inspiring loyalty and a sense of fellowship amongst their followers using the insignia of a black glove, code words, and common, united leadership.
Eventually, the couple realized that they were mortal. What they had would only last forever if they had a child that could lead the guild after them. Eventually, this thinking led to Sedaia’s birth.
Sedaia was given all the training that a young girl could desire… though not half as much love. Her parents taught her to be just like them. She loved her parents even when they were harsh. She strove to attain the prowess of her father and the manipulative grace of her mother. She was on the road to greatness.
However, thing began to grow rocky in the affairs of the guild as Sedaia’s parents strove to raise her. Though most deviants from the guild’s way were killed quickly, one man rose and gained a good deal of support as “the new leader”. He was able to gain support by seeming sympathetic towards Mari and RaMorte. He said that they had served the guild well, but were beyond there time, and he urged guild members to follow him and let the “old couple” retire in piece. Of course, neither Mari nor RaMorte were pleased with this. The man was named Gideon Void.
Unfortunately Void had a large following. The guild was truly split down the middle, half on the side of Void, and the other half on the side of the RaMortes. A guild war began. Most of it was wrangling that occurred under the surface of society, assassinations, sabotage… but eventually it broke out into gang fights on the streets. This drew the immediate attention of Faethaven’s guards. It was a dark time for the Guild.
Sedaia was eleven when her father fell in a street fight. This had been one of the largest street wars in Faethaven’s History. RaMortes clashed with Voids, and innocent bystanders became involved. The guard sent in a full troop. It was a massacre for all parties involved; the guards were definitively the victors, but the battle won Void supremacy in the Guild’s political structure.
Sedaia’s mother quickly followed the change in the tide to renounce that she had ever been in full support of her husband. She proposed to Void that they realign the guild through marriage. Void agreed, but for the first time in Mari’s life she had been out-played. Void married her, but to the fullest extent of the law he as her husband gained her properties and wealth.
The young Sedaia was livid that Mari had sold her birthright to Void. Her greed outweighed anything else in her life. She despised her mother for what the woman had done, but not near as much as she despised Void. Even at her young age, she resolved that they both would die. She left her mothers home like a shadow, and never looked back. She began working as just another thief in the guild, and she learned even more from practical work than she had from tutors. She lusted after skills and knowledge along with money and enchantment- she courted the law like one courts death and always seemed to come out on top. She became renowned for he her slight of hand, her speed with knives, her quick wit and really her all around talent. She began to be called Sedaia Swift, effectively shedding her fathers name to everyone except herself.
Void murdered Mari with poison when Sedaia was 15. The noble house of RaMorte became the house of Void. Gideon was not caught by the guard. Even though Sedaia had planned on killing her mother herself, she used the event to further fuel her hatred for Void. Now that she had a name of her own and had shed her familial connections, she began her campaign against him.
She worked her way up through the ranks of the guild through manipulation. Like her mother she twisted people into her way of thinking, and found herself quickly promoted. By the time she was 18, she was one of Void’s closest partners. He had forgotten that she was the daughter of RaMorte entirely. Now with a good deal of sway, Sedaia began undermining Gideon Void. She changed his orders so that heists would go poorly, then swoop in and rescue the mission, earning her prestige in the eyes of the ranks. She did her best to outsmart him and out command him. She took initiative on things he would want to be informed about, and made herself out to be a better leader than him. Then, just as he was starting to become vexed with her, she made her move.
She snuck into Void’s home- the home she had grown up in. Using a very rare incendiary technology she had taken years to procure, she sabotaged the house. Then, using a forgery of Void’s signature, she lured his closest commanders into the house with him for “a meeting”. It worked almost exactly to plan. The house went up in flames, and collapsed in upon Void and all those higher ups who called him their leader. So too disappeared the noble house of Void, once called RaMorte, once called Koleska.
Sedaia swept into the gap Void left behind him. She threw around the fact that she was the logical successor after Void as the daughter of Mari, and was able to quell most opposition. Those she couldn’t quell, she had killed. She put the most skilled and the most loyal into the command positions left vacant, and the guild fell seamlessly into her hands. At the age of 20, Sedaia Swift was the Queen Bee.
Sedaia has been rebuilding her guilds power ever since. The guild’s code name is House RaMorte, as most just laugh and say that it no longer exists. The guards of Faethaven have been diligently trying to find the heart of Faethaven’s crime ring to no avail. As far as they can tell the extremists of “house RaMorte” have no relation to the organized criminal behavior rampant amongst Faethaven’s citizens. Sedaia leads the guild well, and she is even more cautious of Guild deviance than her parents were. Sedaia is strict but sure, and believes that someday she will marry the king and rule the city from the background. This shows in her demeanor at times. She does believe she’s better than everyone else. Sedaia has multiple houses and hideouts all over the city. One can never know where she’ll pop up.
